North Mecklenburg Greenfield Data Center
Project Highlights
Situated on 17 acres outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, this 35,000 square-foot greenfield data center is the first of its kind in the region for the client and is the largest single-build project for the market based on contract volume. The data center includes:
- Two secured storage rooms
- Two UPS rooms
- Two AC power rooms
- Telco, control, and IT rooms
- Administrative office space
- 13 HVAC units of varying sizes
- Two 3MW Generators and one 500KVA Generator
- Space to accommodate an additional six network rooms
As the owner’s representative, our on-site team collaborated with the general contractor, trades and architect to ensure the project meets the client’s quality standards, design requirements, and schedule and budget targets. Vertex was intricately involved in the design and construction process, reviewing change order requests, removing project obstacles, and identifying instances where the client’s requirements were not being met. For instance, we previously identified that the facility lacked furniture such as desks, storage cabinets, and conference room equipment. Vertex coordinated with the architect, general contractor and client to discuss these deficiencies and developed a plan to supply a furniture package within the project’s existing budgetary constraints.
In addition, when reviewing designs for the installation of a roof hatch ladder, we identified that the installation design was not compatible with the intended placement area and would have created significant safety hazards. We remediated this with the contractor and the design was modified to a safer method of accessing the roof.
By closely managing operations and daily construction activities, Vertex saved the client approximately $2.3 million in change order requests and design specifications while adhering to the original construction schedule and scope.
